About Bloomfield

With a population just under fifty thousand people, Bloomfield, New Jersey attracts many home buyers with its quiet residential neighborhoods, wonderful schools, fabulous transit system, great shopping opportunities, dining choices and businesses within the city.
Bloomfield is an active and vibrant community which was recently named one of seven New Jersey municipalities to win the 2009 Smart Growth Award for its town center redevelopment plan. The “Vision Plan” focuses on Bloomfield’s redevelopment: as a town with an historic urban center, a New Jersey urban lifestyle, a transit village, and an accessible and “green” downtown district.


Parks and Recreation

A booming parks and recreation department includes a network of eight parks and fields complete with ponds, playgrounds, and athletic space dedicated to its residents. There are two county parks within its borders. Brookdale Park is 121 acres (with 77 acres in Bloomfield) and Watsessing Park is 70 acres (with 60 acres in Bloomfield). The motto of the town recreation department is “Not Just Sports”. Aside from the enormous sports program including highly competitive school teams like the high school football program, skate boarding park, town wide track meet and Little League tournament, if offers programs in art, dance and music There are also a number of public and private golf clubs in nearby communities.
 

Culture

Bloomfield is a vibrant town where residents get involved. There is the Bloomfield Art League, Music Federation, fireworks and summer outdoor ‘concerts on the green’ and larger-scale performances in Brookdale Park. There is a holiday tree lighting ceremony, a town Halloween costume contest and even Classic Car Show Cruise nights on Broad Street.

Bloomfield College plays a significant role in town. It was founded in 1868, and in 2009, was named by Forbes Magazine as the 3rd best private college in New Jersey - second only to Princeton and Drew Universities. They also named it the #1 best small college in New Jersey. The Westminster Theatre is on campus and features performances and lectures throughout the year. A charming 300 seat venue, it’s a wonderful place to see a show or attend a concert. The Bloomfield Public Library offers a host of programs and events year -round. A number of theatre companies call this area home and offer local shows for those with a passion for the arts.


Commuting from Bloomfield

The easy access to Manhattan is one of the major draws for people moving to Bloomfield as the town is on the wonderful Boonton Train Line, providing Midtown Direct Service to N.Y. Penn Station. And, as of November 8, 2009, weekend service became available which added greatly to home values in the area. Bloomfield also has fabulous daily bus service to the N.Y. Port Authority. It is an approximate 15 minute drive to Newark Liberty International Airport and is thirty miles to LaGuardia International Airport. The Garden State Parkway is accessible directly from Bloomfield from multiple locations in town.


Bloomfield Schools

Education is highly valued in this community, and the Bloomfield School District has some very highly regarded schools. There are eight elementary schools including Berkeley, Brookdale, Carteret, Demarest, Fairview, Franklin, Oak View and Watsessing. There is one Bloomfield middle school and Bloomfield High School.
