
About Cedar Grove
Dubbed “Beautiful Suburbia” by the Star Ledger,
Cedar Grove just celebrated in Centennial in 2008.
It is very rich in history and is an environmentally
active community. It was originally a small farming
community that has evolved into a much sought after
place to live among the New Jersey suburbs outside
of Manhattan. In 2008, New Jersey Monthly magazine
ranked it the 17th best community to live in New
Jersey, and 4th in Essex County.
Cedar Grove is 4.3 square miles in size and has a
population of over twelve-thousand. It has a very
unusual amount of beautiful protected land for
public use. The community borders Caldwell,
Montclair, Little Falls and Verona, New Jersey and,
like them, is nestled in the Watchung Mountain
range.
What’s in Cedar Grove
Cedar Grove offers quiet residential
neighborhoods as well as a vibrant commercial
district along Route 23 with all sorts of trendy
shops, larger retail stores, restaurants, businesses
and municipal buildings. The Morgan Farm and Museum,
dating back to 1845, is maintained by the Cedar
Grove Historical Society. Cedar Grove is also home
to a beautiful and scenic reservoir along Ridge
Road. The former Meadowbrook Club was known
nationally and featured performers such as Jimmy
Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. The
extensive Cedar Grove Public Library regularly hosts
a number of events for both individuals and
families.
Parks and Recreation
Cedar Grove is home to portions of The Hilltop
Reservation, Mills Reservation and parts of New
Jersey’s famous Lenape Trail, all nature preserves
and plant and wildlife habitats with miles of of
magnificent walking and hiking trails. The Lenape
Trail features the ‘yellow blazes’ which are
shoulder height dashes of yellow paint on trees to
help you find your way. Mills Reservation offers
stunning views of Manhattan and Essex County from
the top. Cedar Grove has tennis courts, several
parks, playgrounds, baseball fields, and even a
bocce ball court.
Commuting from Cedar Grove
Convenient highway access means Cedar Grove is a
great place to live if you’re a commuter. Route 23,
also known as Pompton Ave, is a two way road with
plenty of shopping and dining choices. It also
provides access to Bloomfield Ave and Route 280 to
the south and to Route 46 and Route 3 to the north.
It is served by the New Jersey Transit Bus Service.
Midtown Direct Train line to NYC is available in
nearby Montclair.
Cedar Grove Schools
Cedar Grove’s very highly regarded public school
district has two elementary schools (North End and
South end), Cedar Grove middle school (grades 5-8),
and Cedar Grove High School. Their mission statement
is, “Close Enough to Care, Bold Enough to Dare”.
Cedar Grove also offers choices in private and
parochial education.
The mission statement of the very active Cedar
Grove Education Foundation’s (CGEF - which does so
much including offering scholarships) is to enrich
and enhance the educational experiences of Cedar
Grove students above and beyond the scope of the
regular curriculum and to provide lifelong learning
opportunities for the entire community.
