About Glen Ridge, New Jersey

Glen Ridge is a charming residential community that has 50 of the remaining 3,000 gas street lamps in the United States. The population is almost 8,000 and it is 1.5 square miles in size. With its oblong shape, it runs north/south. Ridgewood Ave is the main residential thoroughfare running the entire length of town and is graced by stately homes on either side. It is bisected by Bloomfield Avenue where its modest amount of commerce is located. More commerce can be accessed by traveling east or west on Bloomfield Ave into the neighboring communities of Bloomfield and Montclair.

What’s in Glen Ridge

In ‘town’, you’ll find some small shops, the post office, public library, train station, a bank, a restaurant/bar, deli, dry cleaners and The Glen Ridge Women’s Club headquartered in a beautiful Brick Georgian Colonial Revival building on the corner of Ridgewood and Snowden. The Women’s Club is extremely active and hosts many events from meetings and social gatherings to yoga, bridge groups, book clubs and the Harvest Festival with haunted house, pumpkin decorating, pony rides and even a petting zoo. Across the street is the historic Glen Ridge Train Station. Built in 1872, it is Queen Anne in style and is on both the National and State registers for Historic Places.

Speaking of history, Glen Ridge is rumored to have the highest percentage of housing stock built before World War II in New Jersey. The goal of the active Glen Ridge Historical Society is to protect the town’s unique character and rich architectural history. Among the many notable residences within Glen Ridge are three designed by Stanford White and one by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Mountainside Hospital, which straddles Glen Ridge and Montclair, is very highly regarded. It is home to a school of nursing, the comprehensive Cancer Center, the Congestive Heart Failure Center, the Chronic Renal Dialysis Center and the Richard F. Harries Ambulatory Care Pavilion. It is also known for its comprehensive gastroenterology and psychiatric services. Mountainside Hospital is a clinical affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School. It is a partner with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and is accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). Details by department are listed below.

For evening fun, perhaps the most popular restaurant and bar in Glen Ridge is Fitzgerald’s, on Herman Street, just off Bloomfield Ave. The private Glen Ridge Country Club, built in 1894, is located in the northern section of Ridgewood Ave and is one of the oldest country clubs in the state. It has an 18-hole championship golf course, swimming pool, Har-Tru tennis courts, fitness center and three restaurants.

Parks and Recreation

The northern tip of Glen Ridge runs right into Brookdale Park, a 121 acre expanse of green space, state-of-the-art running track and soccer field, fieldstone bleachers, biking and running paths, big kid and small kids playgrounds, dog walking park, and many sporting events, outdoor concerts, fairs, Easter Egg Hunt and fantastic Essex County Fourth of July fireworks display.

In 2004, the Glen Ridge Community Pool opened. Aside from being a lovely facility, is has a swim team and events like ‘teen” and ‘tween’ nights with pizza, music and games. Membership is open to all Glen Ridge residents. It is membership-driven only and not supported with taxpayer dollars.

The Freeman Gardens on the south side of Glen Ridge is a historically significant rose garden and very worthy of touring.

Commuting From Glen Ridge

The commute to New York City from Glen Ridge is ideal. From Glen Ridge train station (Ridgewood Ave & Bloomfield Ave) there is NY midtown direct service to Penn Station. Weekend train service became available as of November 8, 2009. You can also take the bus to N.Y. Port Authority or drive via Rte 280 or Rte 3.

Glen Ridge School System

The Glen Ridge School District is outstanding and students score well above state and national averages for standardized tests.
